Presbyopia

Presbyopia, the loss of near vision, occurs later in life as we age. Most people experience this common eye condition around the age of 40. Yet, it is a natural outcome of aging and it is treatable. Thanks to the advances in medical technology, there are several treatments to reverse the symptoms of presbyopia. So, if you are in your 40s and experiencing difficulty in reading, it is better to make sure if you suffer from presbyopia or not.

What is a Presbyopia?

Presbyopia is a common, age-related eye disorder that affects near vision. It is caused by a loss of elasticity in the crystalline lens. This natural lens, which allows us to see close objects clearly, is flexible. As a result of aging process, the crystalline lens loses its flexibility and stiffens. Since the lens becomes more rigid, it is harder to change the shape. It leads to impaired near vision, and difficulty in reading, writing or doing close-up activities. Most people experience the early symptoms of presbyopia in their early to mid-40s. These symptoms worsen and start to have a serious impact on daily activities around the age of 60s. However, there are both non-surgical and surgical treatments to correct presbyopia and improve reading vision.

The Symptoms of Presbyopia

There are signs that indicate you suffer from presbyopia. The typical symptom is difficulty in reading texts with small print. In order to focus properly, people often need to hold books or phones further away from their faces. A hazy or blurry vision, double vision, eye strain and headaches are observed as the eyes try to perform close-up activities, especially in dim light and when you are tired. These symptoms develop gradually and get worse when presbyopia is left untreated. If you are experiencing these symptoms, it is important to consult an ophthalmologist to get an eye examination right away.

Presbyopia Treatments

Presbyopia is not preventable, however, it is treatable. Since there are several treatments to correct presbyopia, first you should consult an ophthalmologist to decide what is best for you. Usually, presbyopia is successfully corrected with reading glasses, contact lenses or laser surgery.

  • Reading Glasses
If you don’t have any vision problems other than presbyopia, reading glasses are suitable for you. There are also different types of glasses to treat presbyopia, such as progressive (varifocal) glasses and bifocal glasses. Progressive (varifocal) glasses offer three viewing areas for near-, mid- and distance vision in one pair of glasses, while bifocal glasses are divided into two different prescriptions for near and distance vision in a single lens.
  • Contact Lenses

Since contact lenses are more convenient, some people prefer to wear them instead of glasses. Multifocal contact lenses are designed with different zones to treat near and far vision. On the other hand, monovision contact lenses which correct one eye for distance vision and the other for near vision, are also used to correct presbyopia.

  • Laser Eye Surgery

LASIK is a popular eye surgery that allows to correct refractive errors. With the help of using a laser, it is possible to change the shape of the cornea. To correct presbyopia, the procedure called monovision is carried out by using LASIK.
