Eye Tumors
Eye tumors -like any tumors- can be a serious health issue. On this article, we will be informing you about eye tumors. What are they? What cause them? How are they treated? You will be able to find the answers to all these questions -and many more- in the following lines.
Here’s all you need to know about eye tumors.
What are Eye Tumors?
Also called ocular tumors, eye tumors form in the eye, and can be cancerous or noncancerous. Cancerous tumors are called malignant while non-cancerous tumors are called benign. Most common eye tumor type is metastatic- secondary eye tumor caused by cancer spreading from one part of the body to another.
Although ocular melanoma is the most common primary adult eye tumor, it is still a rare disease. Ocular melanoma is also called choroidal melanoma or uveal melanoma.
The tumor is made from pigmented cells -the cells in the eye that give it color. This kind of tumor happens in three main parts of the eye: the ciliary body, the choroid, and the iris. In the whole, these parts are called the uvea.
Less common types of primary eye tumors are retinoblastoma, intraocular lymphoma, and hemangioma. Rare eye cancers are eyelid carcinoma, conjunctival melanoma, and lacrimal gland tumors.
Eye Tumor Causes
Different things can cause eye tumors. The causes of cancerous eye tumors are different from cancerous tumors. But, as we have mentioned before, tumors in the eye are most of the time secondary tumors caused by cancers spread from other body parts- especially lung, the breast, bowel or prostate.
Eye Tumor Treatment
There are various ways to treat ocular tumors. The treatment option(s) to take will depend on the diagnosis, aggressiveness of the tumor, the size of the tumor, and several other factors.
For example, some small eye tumors may respond well to laser treatment or cryosurgery (freezing). Or, in some cases, it is possible to surgically remove the tumor from the eye, and still preserve vision.
In cases of advanced eye cancer, which must be treated aggressively or removed, reconstructive eye surgery might be performed by plastic surgeons. With the advancements in medical technology, artificial eyes -also called implants- are almost indistinguishable from real eyes. At the end the doctor and the patient should have a discussion about what will be the best solution, before taking a step towards treatment.
