What is Cataracts?

A cataract can be defined as the clouding of the lens of a person’s eye, which should normally be clear. People with cataracts may feel like they are looking through a fogged-up window. Cataracts usually develop as aging or injury changes the eye's lens. Fibers and proteins in the healthy lens begin to break down, and this causes the vision to become cloudy. In addition, certain inherited genetic disorders that cause several other health issues may increase a person’s risk of developing cataracts.

What Happens in Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery is basically a procedure in which a surgeon removes the clouded lens from the patient’s eye, and then replaces it with an artificial lens. This artificial lens is called an intraocular lens. After the operation, this intraocular lens remains a permanent part of the patient’s eye.

Usually, cataracts surgery is done as an outpatient procedure, which means the patient does not need to stay at the hospital after the surgery. The surgeon uses a local anesthetic for the procedure, and the patient stays awake during the operation. Cataract surgery is generally considered safe, but it still includes a risk of bleeding/infection. This surgery is also known to increase the risk of retinal detachment.

After the surgery, the patient will feel some discomfort for a few days. Usually, healing occurs within a few weeks.
